Critical Thinking
Having the ability to analyze data is an important tool in the business world. It shows the ability to look at data and identify problems and opportunities, generate alternatives and develop justifiable conclusions and recommendations.
_What I Did
The document attached below is an analytic document prepared in my ‘Operations Management’ class. The task was to use four methods of analyzing data to provide the example company, Quick Change Shoppe, with information that they could use to influence further decisions regarding their customer complaints.
The first task was to identify which analytical methods to use to break down the data into meaningful information. The information could then be used to show problems and opportunities in the form of organized charts and graphs. I used a check sheet to identify and organize the complaints into specific areas of the business over a 4 week period. This chart showed that the waiting room was the main area of complaint. By translating the data into Pareto charts, I was able to illustrate that the complaints were consistently high, peaking in the third week which shows that there is not one set scenario causing the complaints. Finally, I constructed a cause and effect diagram to illustrate the factors that were being complained about in the waiting room and aspects that could lead to unsatisfied customers.
I was able to write a report in the form of a memo to the owner of the company detailing the areas that were of main concern and why. Following the description of the problems I made justifiable recommendations to the owner of how he could improve upon his problems with customer service.
Why it is Important
The analytical memo proves that I can transform raw data into graphs and charts which can then be analyzed and interpreted to make better business decisions.
